A Safe Adventure is a Fun Adventure
There are few things more joyful than watching your dog bound happily down a trail, exploring the sights and smells of the great outdoors. Hiking with dogs is a fantastic way to bond with your pet and give them the physical and mental exercise they crave. But just like you wouldn't hit the trail without water and proper shoes, your dog needs their own set of essential gear to stay safe, comfortable, and energized.
Before you head out on your next day trip, use this dog hiking gear checklist to make sure you have everything you need for a successful adventure.
The Absolute Essentials (Don't Leave Home Without These)
1. Water and a Collapsible Bowl
- Why it's essential: This is the single most important item. Dogs can't regulate their temperature as efficiently as humans and can dehydrate quickly, especially on a warm day. Do not rely on finding streams or puddles, which can contain harmful bacteria.
- What to pack: Pack at least 1 liter of fresh water for your dog for a half-day hike. A lightweight, collapsible silicone or fabric bowl is easy to clip onto your pack.
2. A Proper Leash and Harness
- Why it's essential: Even if your dog has perfect recall, most trails require dogs to be leashed to protect wildlife and other hikers. A standard 6-foot leash is best—avoid retractable leashes, which offer poor control and can be dangerous.
- What to pack: A sturdy harness is better than a collar for hiking, as it prevents choking if your dog pulls and gives you better control on tricky terrain. Look for a harness with a handle on the back, which is incredibly useful for helping your dog over obstacles.
3. Poop Bags
- Why it's essential: Leave No Trace applies to your dog, too. Dog waste can contaminate water sources and spread disease.
- What to pack: Bring more bags than you think you'll need. Pack out everything your dog leaves behind. A small, odor-proof "poop pouch" that clips to your pack is a great investment for carrying the used bags.
4. High-Energy Snacks
- Why it's essential: Your dog is burning extra calories on the trail. Just like you might pack a granola bar, bring some high-value, high-energy treats to keep their energy levels up.
- What to pack: Small, easy-to-digest dog treats or kibble.
Highly Recommended Gear (Smart to Have)
5. Dog-Specific First-Aid Kit
- Why it's essential: From a torn paw pad to a bee sting, minor injuries can happen on the trail. Being prepared can prevent a small issue from becoming a major problem.
- What to pack: You can buy a pre-made dog first-aid kit or build your own. It should include: antiseptic wipes, liquid bandage, self-adhering vet wrap, tweezers (for ticks and splinters), and any personal medications your dog needs.
6. Paw Protection
- Why it's essential: Hot pavement, sharp rocks, and icy trails can be brutal on a dog's paws.
- What to pack: For serious hikers, a set of rugged dog booties (like those from Ruffwear) is a great investment. At a minimum, carry a small container of paw balm or wax (like Musher's Secret) to soothe and protect their pads.
7. ID Tags and Identification
- Why it's essential: The unthinkable can happen. Make sure your dog's collar has a clearly legible ID tag with your name and cell phone number. A microchip is also highly recommended.
By taking a few extra minutes to pack this essential gear for dogs, you ensure that your hiking trip is memorable for all the right reasons. A prepared pup is a happy pup, ready for a safe and exciting day of dog adventure.
